If you find yourself wandering the streets of Florence’s historic center in December, you’re in for a show of lights, colours and scents: the piazzas glow with Christmas decorations, the streets fill with festive music, and the markets offer sweets, mulled wine and small treasures to take home.
A festive fun fact: at the Mercato Nuovo, among the stalls and lights, stands the famous Fontana del Porcellino (the Little Pig Fountain). Rubbing the bronze pig’s snout and dropping a coin into the grate below is a local tradition said to bring luck and good cheer for the year ahead — a small gesture that makes the stroll feel even more magical.
